He graduated in piano and composition at the Conservatory in Florence. Riccardo Muti called him at the Teatro Comunale in Florence and in 1974 he named him choirmaster of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino. From 1990 to 2002, the same Riccardo Muti called him to conduct the choir of Teatro alla Scala in Milan. At the end of the 1990s he collaborated with the St. Cecilia Academy and Myung-Whun Chung and since 2000 he has worked with the Radio France Choir. From 2001 to 2006, named by Luciano Berio, he was choirmaster of the St. Cecilia Academy. From 2008 to 2010 he was choirmaster at the Teatro Regio in Turin and since 2010 he has worked at the Opera in Rome. For about fourty years he has conducted the most outstanding Italian choirs, working carefully on liric, symphonic and chamber repertoire, ranging from ‘500 to ‘900. During his long career he has collaborated with the most important orchestra conductors and has taken part in the major choral-symphonic productions and many world premieres.
He has been teaching at the Accademia Chigiana since 2015.
