The Course can be attended by percussion soloists and ensembles (until Quartet).
For the entrance examination Candidates must perform as follows:
Soloists: a program of their own choosing, about 20
minutes long, in which important XXth Century works for
solo percussion are to be included;
Ensemble (until Quartet): a program of their own
choosing, about 20 minutes long, in which important XXth Century works for ensemble percussion are to be included.
The chosen pieces must be indicated beforehand on the application form. For the entrance examination the following instruments will be given available by the Accademia Chigiana:
- marimba 5 octaves
- 4 timpani
- 4 bongos
- 6 tam tam
- 6 suspended cymbals
- 2 djambee
- pedal bass drum
- side drum
- 2 symphonic bass drum
- wood blocks
- 6 thai gongs
- 2 octaves crotali
- 12 tom tom
- 2 congas
- 2 tambourine
- 2 triangles
The Course will consist of daily lessons divided into two parts: one dedicated to instrumental techniques of Twentieth Century percussion instruments literature and the other one dedicated to the study of the following pieces:
- Drums of Winter (from “Earth and the Great Weather”) by John Luther Adams;
- Anima by Giorgio Battistelli;
- Tune by Mario Bertoncini;
- Looking for “The Savage Mind” by Lucio Gregoretti;
- Trama pulsante by Giorgio Nottoli;
- Six Japanese Gardens by Kaija Saariaho;
- Dmaathen, Komboï, Oopha, Persephassa;
- Pshappa by Iannis Xenakis.
These compositions will be performed during the concerts on July 27th and July 31st within the Chigiana International Festival 2019.
