Winner in 1975 of the second prize at the Munich International Competition, he is today one of the world’s most highly renowned violists. In 1984 he founded the Moscow Soloists’ Orchestra, with which he appears in the double role of conductor and solo violist. He teaches at the Moscow Conservatory. In 1992 and again in 1994 he was named “year’s best instrumentalist” at the Classical Musical Awards. Since 2003 he has been Chief Director and Artistic Director of the “New Russia” Symphonic Orchestra.

Jurij Bashmet teaches viola at the Academy since 1987
