Five finalists. Daniele Rustioni conducts the Orchestra della Toscana

With a brand new title and theme, Sounding Times, the Chigiana International Festival & Summer Academy 2018 will be running this year from July 6th to August 31st 2018, in Siena and in the most evocative locations of the Sienese countryside. Directed by Nicola Sani, the Festival includes the 84th prestigious Chigiana Summer Academy, offering 62 exclusive concerts and musical events that focus especially on the relationship between sound and time in music, with programs ranging from Baroque to the greatest composers of our time.

The billboard is organized in 8 thematic itineraries – Today (the new proposals, the music of today), Legends (the great interpreters and masters), Factor (the Summer Academy’s young talents), Off the Wall (concerts in the most evocative places of the Sienese countryside), Expanded (musical projects born out of the encounter with other artistic disciplines), Mix (unpublished projects and collaborations with other institutions), News Sounds (the new sounds and masters of our time) and Lounge (open lectures and meetings with the artists).

Festival opens on Friday July 6th at the Teatro dei Rinnovati, with the Premio Chigiana’s finals, dedicated this year to opera singing. Daniele Rustioni, a Chigiana alumnus and today one of the most renown Italian conductors leads the ORT-Orchestra della Toscana. Finalists will be announced on May 7th, after the last run of preliminary auditions (held in New York, Florence, Moscow and Seoul in collaboration with prestigious partners of the opera world).

The prestigious Prize – awarded in the past to promising artist such as Gidon Kremer, Krystian Zimerman, Evgeny Kissin, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Viktoria Mullova, Esa Pekka Salonen – was reborn in 2017, after years of inactivity. Transformed into an international competition, it now promotes the talent of the new generations of performers who look onto the international concert scene. This year competition is on opera singing. The jury for the 2018 edition is composed by Fabio Armiliato (tenor), Olga Peretyatko (soprano), Nicholas Payne (President of Opera Europa), Pierangelo Conte (Maggio Musicale Fiorentino), Luisa Vinci (Accademia Teatro alla Scala), Alexander Romanovsky (pianist), Paolo Petrocelli (Accademia Chigiana) and Nicola Sani. The prizes associated with the Golden Star and the Silver Star of Chigiana are respectively 12,000 and 8,000 euros. In addition, concert engagements in Italy and abroad, and scholarships are offered by the Academy and its partners to support the career start of the winners.

Focus: Stockhausen 90 – After Kurtág in 2016 and Sciarrino in 2017, this year, the Festival’s contemporary composer focus is on Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007), on the 90th anniversary of his birth. His thoughts on music have often focused on the concept of time. His visionary, unconventional, revolutionary and controversial compositional activity will be retraced through the performance of 14 of his most important acoustic and electronic works, for soloists and ensembles, starting with Stimmung (1968), in the interpretation of the Chorus of Siena Cathedral “Guido Chigi Saracini”, directed by Lorenzo Donati (8 July, Church of S. Agostino), to continue with: Harlekin (1975), Kathinka’s Gesang als Luzifers Requiem (1982-83), Klavierstück XIV (1984), Kreuzspiel (1951), Refrain (1959), Vibra Elufa (2003), Zyklus (1959), Kontra-Punkte (1952), Klavierstück XIII Luzifers Traum (1982), theatrical production of Tierkreis (Zodiaco, 1974) directed by Maria Claudia Massari, Solo (1965-66) and two additional versions of Tierkreis, for cello and piano and for choir. Together with the classical repertoire, the festival main concern is, more in general, on the lastest two centuries of music, from Claude Debussy to Steve Reich. Among the novelties, a world premiere of Adriano Guarnieri, for piano and live electronics (July 25th), and works by Iannis Xenakis, Luigi Nono, Fabio Nieder, Giorgio Battistelli, Toshio Hosokawa, Osvaldo Golijov, Stefano Gervasoni and Nicola Sani. A tribute is dedicated to Daniele Lombardi, a few months after his death, with a piano recital by Giancarlo Cardini (July 10th).

Legends – The Chigiana International Festival gives also a chance to discover, in a new set and with original programs, some of great interpreters who also teach in Siena, like Boris Belkin, performing together with the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana (July 27th), the orchestra in residence for Daniele Gatti’s conducting course, directed by Luciano Acocella and in violin and piano duo with Lilya Zilberstein (August 6th). Lilya Zilberstein in turn is engaged for the first time in quintet with the Quartetto Prometeo (July 23rd), ensemble in residence for Salvatore Sciarrino’s composition course and with the great American clarinetist David Krakauer and Chigiana’s strings students, in a new project dedicated to the “multidimensional universe of the clarinet” (30th July). The cellists: David Geringas will perform in duo with pianist Ian Fountain (August 22nd), from Schumann to Schnittke, while Antonio Meneses proposes an exciting journey through time between the cello Suites by Johann Sebastian Bach and the Brazilian contemporary composers (August 1st and 2nd). Alessandro Carbonare (clarinet) will interpret Stockhausen’s masterpiece Harlekin for the first time together with the dancer and choreographer Alessandra Ruggeri (July 13th) and with Antonio Caggiano on percussions. Salvatore Accardo, together with Antonio Meneses & “Friends” will be involved in two string quintets by Schubert and Brahms (August 11th). The great guitarist Eliot Fisk, in a recital tribute to the 80 years of his mentor Oscar Ghiglia, with the participation of Oscar Ghiglia himself (August 5th) will address five centuries’ masterpieces for guitar. Violist Kim Kashkashian presents her Trio Tre Voci with Marina Piccini (flute) and Sivan Magen (harp) in a program with French and Japanese twentieth century music (August 7th). Giuseppe Ettorre (double bass) in duo with Pierluigi Ditella, will perform in a program that ranges from Sammartini to Scelsi and Pärt (August 4th(. Christian Schmitt (oboe) is in duo with pianist Alessandra Gentile (August 17th). Furthermore, the festival welcomes back the young Dutch cellist Ella van Poucke, winner of the 2017 Edition of the Chigiana Prize, who will close the bill on August 31st in duo with pianist Gabriele Carcano.

Factor – The students of the Chigiana Summer Academy, from over 40 different countries, are featured in new and original productions that will allow them to experience in Siena the thrill of an international debut. Among the most exciting moments of the Festival, these concerts are dedicated to artists that are destinated to tread the boards of tomorrow’s international stages. This year, in particular, William Matteuzzi’s opera students will star in an extraordinary new production of Händel’s oratorio The Triumph of Time and Truth, together with the Baroque ensemble Il Rossignolo, conducted by Ottaviano Tenerani (July 24th).

Today – Special guests Irvine Arditti and the Arditti Quartet (July 29th) are starring in two masterpieces by Alban Berg and Luigi Nono, with the sound direction by Alvise Vidolin. Pianists Aldo Orvieto (July 25th) and Anton Gerzenberg (July 28th) interpret masterpieces of the great classical and modern repertoire in an exciting dialogue with new technologies. Sandro Cappelletto signs and interprets a new dramaturgy of Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fins du Temps (July 12th), with a quartet featuring famous French cellist Alain Meunier, together with Alessandro Mingrone (violin), Yoshua Fortunato (clarinet) and Anne Le Bozec (piano). The program also features Nicola Sani’s A time for the evening, inspired by T.S. Eliot Quartets. Oboist Christian Schmitt returns to Siena with the Chigiana Percussion Ensemble (July 26th).

Expanded, News Sounds, Mix – Exclusive projects, characterized by unprecedented contaminations and combinations, animate the Festival interdisciplinary line. A sound and action painting event features Antonio Caggiano’s (conducting) Patrick Gallois (flute), the Chigiana Percussion Ensemble, Luigi Pecchia (piano), Francesco Dillon (cello), Alvise Vidolin and Nicola Bernardin’s (live electronics) who will interact with Tiina Osara’s live painting (July 21st). Ernst Reijseger and Stefano Battaglia star in the New Sounds section, dedicated to music for images, and to jazz and new languages (August 23rd and 24th). The new co-production of Chigiana and Siena Jazz is dedicated to Gershwin and Bernstein’s America, with David Krakauer and the Siena Jazz University Orchestra, the Chigiana Percussion Ensemble, the Orchestra of the Conservatori della Toscana, Giuseppe Ettorre, Antonio Caggiano, the Siena Jazz masters and the Chigiana’s students, directed by Tonino Battista and Roberto Spadoni. Finally, the new Chigiana Art Café will be the scene of an event dedicated to new sound trends: Current Shapes, directed by Pietro Ferrari, in collaboration with Inner Room, which presents ambient and sound art works of the last 50 years (Aug. 25th).

Lounge – The lecture series, which this year has been expanded, is closely linked to the theme of the festival. Meetings will take place at the museum of Santa Maria della Scala. Salvatore Sciarrino will hold three lectures on “sound” and “time” (July 11th, 12th and 19th). Two events are dedicated to Stockhausen (July 13th and 26th) and four to the relationship between time and sound (The sound of the times: July 24th – as introduction of the Händel oratory, July 29th dedicated to Nono’s La nostalgica distanza utopica futura, interpreted by Irvine Arditti and August 1st, combined with the double bill with Antonio Meneses alternating Bach’s cello suites with the works of Brazilian authors inspired by Bach). The last meeting is dedicated to the influence of American rhythms in Gershwin and Bernstein and on the music as we know it today (We’ve got rhythm, August 3rd).

Off the wall – Moreover, the Chigiana International Festival represents a compelling invitation to discover the beautiful locations of the Sienese and Tuscan territory, where most of the concerts take place: among these, the famous Abbey of S. Galgano, that will be a remarkable set design for the concert inspired by the presence and the influence of stars … A riveder le stelle (July 15th) performed by the Cathedral Choir “Guido Chigi Saracini” directed by Lorenzo Donati; the Cloister of Torri in Sovicille (August 7th with Kim Kashkashian and the Tre Voci trio); the Church of San Salvatore di Castellina in Chianti (August 4th). The locations list is completed by the Romanesque Pieve di Ponte allo Spino Montalcino in Sovicille, San Pietro’s Museum of sacred and contemporary art in Colle Val d’Elsa, the Church of the Consolata in Punta Ala, and Piazza delle Carceri, in the medieval village of Murlo.
